WA1588 WebSphere Product Suite Overview Training and Courseware

This course is intended for Java programmers who are interested in learning about the WebSphere and Rational family of products.   Students will obtain an introduction to two members of the Rational family:  Rational Software Architect and Rational Application Developer.  Rational Software Architect can be used for UML modeling, Java development, application assembly, and unit testing.  Rational Application Developer provides a subset of the features offered by Rational Software Architect.   Students will also obtain an introduction to two members of the WebSphere family:   WebSphere Application Server and WebSphere Portal Server.  WebSphere Application Server serves as a run-time environment for J2EE applications and WebSphere Portal Server, which runs atop WebSphere Application Server, serves as a runtime environment for portal applications.  Last but not least, students will obtain an introduction to Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE), a technology which underscores all of the products mentioned above.

Topics
  • Overview of WebSphere Product Line
  • Overview of Rational Product Line
  • Introduction to Rational Software Architect v7
  • Development of Java Applications Based on a UML Model
  • Introduction to Rational Application Developer v7
  • Overview of J2EE
  • Overview of WebSphere Application Server v6.1
  • Overview to J2EE 1.4 Architecture and Services
  • Introduction to WebSphere Portal Server v6
Practical Work

Students will use Rational Software Architect to transform an existing UML model into Java code.  Later, they will create a J2EE application consisting of Servlets, JSPs, EJBs, and the generated Java code, and test it using the built-in WebSphere Test Environment.  Students will also deploy a J2EE application to WebSphere Application Server.  Finally, students will use Rational Software Architect to create portlets and deploy them to WebSphere Portal Server.

What you will learn

After completing this course, the student should be able to:

  • Understand the categories of products that make up the WebSphere and Rational product lines
  • Import projects into Rational Software Architect
  • Transform UML models to Java code using Rational Software Architect
  • Develop and test J2EE components (Servlets, JSPs, and EJBs) using Rational Software Architect and the built-in WebSphere Test Environment
  • Deploy applications to WebSphere Application Server using the Administration Console
  • Develop and test portlets using Rational Software Architect and WebSphere Portal Server.
Audience
This course is intended for those who have Java knowledge and are interested in using or transitioning to the Rational and WebSphere suite of products.
